Black Horsegram Lemon Rice/Kollu Lemon Rice

Have you ever noticed that horsegram do exists as black horsegram, usually we get brownish horsegrams from Indian groceries. But during my last trip to India, i saw black horsegrams in a departmental store, obviously i picked them immediately. As much as like usual horsegrams, these black beauties are extremely nutritious and healthy as well. Horsegram offers good amount of proteins and their medicinal properties have long history in India. Various parts of Horsegram plants are used in Ayurvedic treatments of Asthama, kidney stones, jaundice and urinary disorders.Horsegrams have high amount of iron and its helps in reducing iron deficiencies in wormen. Drinking horsegram water or horsegram soups is quite healthy especially for women. This protein rich,low fat horsegram is very much included in weight loss diet. Do you know boiled sprouted horsegram as morning breakfast is healthy and helps a lot in reduce weight.

Karuppu Kollu Lemon Rice, Horsegram Lemon rice

Horse gram is one of the healthiest food to include quite often in one's diet. Adding horsegram in any dish will be nutritious with many health benefits.  If you have cooked leftover horsegram after using their cooked water for making Rasam aka Indian soup, then this ultimate dish takes hardly less than half an hour to get ready.Serve it along with fried papads or boiled eggs, this lemon rice will definitely fills everyone's hungry tummy easily. If you want to feed your loved ones with Horsegram, dont hesitate a second to check this delicious tangy rice. Needless to say that this protein rich rice goes to this month's blogging marathon as we are running with Protein rich dishes as theme. Hence this lipsmacking lemon rice will definitely please anyone's taste buds.

Black Horsegram Lemon Rice, Kollu Lemon Rice

1/4cup Fresh lemon juice
3cups Cooked rice
1/2cup Cooked black horsegram

For tempering:
1/4tp Mustard seeds
1/4tsp Urad dal
1/4tsp Channa dal
tbsp Ginger pieces (minced finely)
2nos Green chillies (slit opened)
3nos Dry red chillies
1/4tsp Asafoetida powder
Few Curry leaves
3tbsp Oil
1/2tsp Turmeric powder

Mix the already cooked rice with lemon juice and salt, (add lemon juice as ur need).

Now heat the oil and add all the ingredients from the list one by one for tempering except turmeric powder to the hot oil and fry until everything turns brown.

Add finally the turmeric powder,cooked black horse grams and take care not to burn the turmeric powder.

Horsegram Lemon Rice

Add this tempered spices to the rice,toss everything well until the rice and black horsegrams gets well mixed.

Serve hot with spicy side dishes.

Didn't know that there are two types of horse gram available. Will check it when I go for shopping. This lemon rice looks so inviting and the addition of kollu makes it more interesting..

It is a great idea to include horse gram in lemon rice.I love kollu and as you said I use the water for the rasam too.

Lemon and horsegram sound like an interesting combination. Never seen black ones before though. I didn't know about horesgram sprouts either. Thanks for that tip

my friend makes a kulith (horesegram) rice similar to masala bhath - using it with lemon rice is a good idea..
