Green Apple & Dal Rasam

Whoever knows me well, will definitely say that am a 'Rasam piriyai'..yes i love rasam, its one of the comforting food i would like to enjoy in my everyday menu..After making out rasam with ususal veggies like butter nut squash, avocado, my next attempt was with green apple..This green apples are quite sour and crunchy so that can be eaten as salads but when they get cooked, they tastes quite similar like mangoes and this green apple chunks in this rasam tastes as though, we had this slight sweet and sour rasam for our today's lunch with fried fish, both together works out wonder and we enjoyed having this green apple and dal rasam for our lunch...Easy, simple and truly delicious rasam tastes fantastic with hot steaming rice and spicy potato roast also..This apple rasam goes to Nithu Bala's Think Beyond The Usual-Fruits...

2nos Green apples
1/4cup Toor dal
1/4tsp Turmeric powder
1tsp Rasam powder
1tbsp Lemon juice
1/2tsp Mustard seeds+cumin seeds
1/4tsp Asafoetida powder
2nos Dry red chillies
5nos Curry leaves
2tbsp Coriander leaves( chopped)
Salt
Oil

Peel and chop the green apples, keep aside half a cup of apple chunks and pressure cook the remaining apples chunks with toor dal and turmeric powder with enough water upto 3hisses...Once they get well cooked, smash the apple & dal mixture nicely and keep aside.

Heat enough oil, let splutters the mustard seeds, cumin seeds, dry red chillies and asafoetida powder, once the spices get well fried, add the apple chunks and saute everything for a while, finally add the apple-dal mixture with rasam powder, water, curry leaves, coriander leaves and salt..once they starts bubbling, add the lemon juice and put off the stove..

Enjoy hot with rice and any spice dish
