I have tried couple of Chaklis aka murukkus with different grains, root vegetables and even with spinach, but still i have some root vegetables to cook and dish out some savouries with. Hence i opted for Sweet potato. Sweet potato is an incredible root vegetable which is quite versatile to dish out many fantabulous sweets, bakes and many more fabulous dishes out of it.  Since its diwali, i cant  think more than making some chaklis aka murukkus with this excellent root vegetable. Initially i was bit skeptical to try as sweet potatoes as these root vegetables tends to be sweet. However my creative mind was very much tempted to give a try this sweet potato murukku hence i tried my hands with this combination.

Ribbon murukku, is also known as naada murukku, ribbon pakoda, ola pakoda is a variety of murukku which is often made in Tamil Nadu especially for Diwali or Janmasthami in most of the houses. This murukku is called as ribbon murukku as its ressembles like nada, ribbon or string. And the main ingredients for making this crispy snack is rice flour and gram flour. Apart from it, various spices like chilli powder, cumin seeds, sesame seeds, asafoetida are added to this murukku dough to bring the flavor. As much as like other Murukku varieties, this murukku also calls for a special nozzle which is often available along with the Murukku maker.

Red Rice Flakes Murukku/Sivappu Aval Murukku

Have you ever tried making out Chaklis aka some crispy murukkus with rice flakes, if not you should try atleast once as they are extremely crispy and dangerously addictive. Red rice flakes when grounded as fine powder and sieved, they are just ready to prepare your murukku dough with other ingrédients like gram flour, butter, sesame seeds and asafoetida powder. Grounded and sieved red rice flakes once mixed with other ingrédients makes this incredible crispy munchies. Actually red rice flakes grounded as flour replace very well the humble rice flour we usually use for making the murukku dough.

Parboiled Rice Cashew Murukku/Munthiri Puzhungal Arisi Murukku

Usually murukkus aka chaklis is prepared easily with less efforts with store bought rice flour, though they can prepared with soaked and grounded parboiled rice aka puzhungal arisi (parboiled rice is called as puzhungal arisi). Usually grounded thick, this parboiled rice is mixed with roasted gram flour, which is spiced and flavored with grated coconut, cumin seeds, butter and salt. I do this parboiled rice murukku quite often, but for a change, my today's recipe goes for an another rich ingredient. Yes i have opted for cashew nuts to make this incredible crispy beauties. Though the grinding part may call for time consuming, you can squeeze out this murukkus easily with less efforts.

Vella Seedai/Vella Cheedai/Sweet Seedai

Seedai, these crispy balls are traditionally prepared during Gokulastami festival. Usually i make uppu seedai which goes for the savoury version and dunno why i never tried making sweet seedais. Making seedais at home is definitely a tricky one, the most freaky part is while frying these balls coz sometimes they can burst. Actually all depends upon the rice flour you go for making this crispy balls.Either homemade or store bought rice flour, you need to sieve and dry roast rice flour in simmer until a nice aroma comes from, then you can proceed making the balls which you need to dry a bit by spreading them over a paper towel or over a muslin cloth to remove the moisture of these balls, if you follow these both methods am sure your seedais wont burst at all. I learned everything by my experience, obviously after so many flops one can learn by themselves na.

For our this month's Indian Cooking Challenge,a monthly event where we cook dishes from various regions of India. For this month's challenge, Srivalli gave us to cook both uppu seedai and vella seedai, but i picked the sweet seedai to cook for this month's challenge, finally i prepared these dangerously addictive sweet deep fried balls at home. They came out extremely prefect, we couldnt stop munching them. Thanks Valli for pulling me to make these sweet version.
