One Pot Watermelon & Green Chickpeas Kootu

Am an ardent fan of one pot dishes, yes these dishes are quite easy to prepare as they calls for a pot. Most of my one pot dishes goes for Indian pressure cookers. Indian pressure cookers are definitely a blessing if you know how to handle them. I have been cooking with them since my earlier young age and i cant survive without them. Hence i have more than 5 types of pressure cookers. From cooking rice to dishing out a gravy, i always look for pressure cooking. Today's post is a one pot dish as i prepared this complete dish through pressure cooker. You doesnt need any other vessel for tempering to sauteeing the vegetables, as pressure cooker is quite enough to dish out this fabulous kootu which is quite rich in protein.

One pot Watermelon & Green Chickpeas Kootu

Am running this week's blogging marathon with 'One Pot Dishes' as theme, after a quick and delicious one pot meal pulao, here comes an another excellent dish. Kootu is a dal based vegetable curry which is quite known in Southern part of India, this dish have their own place in every marriage menu in Tamil Nadu. Hence kootu is one of the popular curry which is often cooked in many households. Easy to cook this dish calls for an easy cooking method as well. And i always dish out this kootu in pressure cooker as its takes very less time to get ready when compared to the usual cooking process.

One pot Chickpeas & Watermelon Kootu

1+1/2cups Watermelon (white part & chopped)
1cup Green chickpeas
1/2cup Channadal (washed & soaked)
1no Onion (chopped)
1no Tomato (chopped)
1/4tsp Turmeric powder
Salt
Oil
1tsp Mustard seeds, urad dal & cumin seeds
3nos Dry red chillies
Few curry leaves
1/4tsp Asafoetida powder
Chopped coriander leaves

To Grind:
2tbsp Grated coconut
3nos Green chillies
1tsp Cumin seeds
1tsp Peppercorns

Grind all the ingredients given under the list 'To Grind' as fine paste with some water.

Heat enough oil in a pressure cooker, let crack the mustard seeds, urad dal, cumin seeds along with asafoetida powder and curry leaves.

Add the chopped onions, chopped tomatoes and saute for until the onions turns transculent, add the chopped watermelon pieces, saute until the veggies get half cooked.

Now add the chickpeas with turmeric powder, salt and saute for few minutes.

Watermelon Chickpeas Kootu

Add the washed and soaked channadal, saute for few minutes.

Add enough water and pressure cook everything upto 3 hisses..

Once the pressure get released, add the grounded paste and cook for few minutes,put off the stove.

Serve with rice.

  5. This looks delicious and good use of watermelon's white part. We do make bhaji from white part as well as the green part. Watermelon is completely edible. Awesome share.
