Third dish with Quinoa for this week's blogging marathon is our usual South Indian masal vadai aka channadal fritters loaded with quinoa. You might have noticed that am running this week's blogging marathon with Protein rich ingredients and i opted for Quinoa. Quinoa is a protein rich grains,and these tiny grains are extremely versatile to dish out many incredible dishes out of it. Masal vadais are quite popular in South Indian cuisine, these dal based fritters have their own place in any festive meals or for an evening snacks. These masal vadais are common snack foods in many tea shops and they are easily available in each and every corner of Tamil nadu. Its quite a street food as well. Masal vadais are prepared with many variations, however channadal based masal vadais are the most common one and i love these vadais very much.
Actually i prepared this quinoa masal vadai for the Tamil New year feast, when i soaked the channa dal for making masala vadais, i couldnt stop myself adding quinoa to the dals. Eventhough i was quite skeptical about this combination, once i fried these vadais i couldnt stop munching them as these vadais came out extremely crispy and ultimate. Apart from adding Quinoa, these masal vadais calls for usual ingredients. With loads of onions, trust me these crispy vadas are seriously very addictive to munch. These vadas goes awesome as side dish as well as an excellent evening snacks when served along with some spicy chutney. Make these crispy vadas if you are craving for something crispy for your snacks.
1+1/2cups Channadal
1/2cup Quinoa
1no Onion (chopped)
2nos Green chillies (chopped)
1tsp Ginger (chopped)
Few Curry leaves
2nos Garlic cloves
1/2tsp Fennel seeds
Salt
Oil for deepfrying
Soak the channadal and quinoa together for atleast 3 hours.
Grind the soaked channadal, quinoa,garlic cloves,fennel seeds as coarse paste without water, if its too hard to grind,just sprinkle some water.
Add the chopped onions, chopped green chillies, chopped ginger pieces, curryleaves and salt, mix everything well.
Meanwhile heat the oil for deep frying, take a small ball from the grounded mixture, flat them in your palms and gently drop them in hot oil.
Fry them until they get well cooked, strain the excess of oil with a paper towel..
Serve hot with spicy coconut chutney.
