Fa Gao/Chinese Fortune Cake

You might have heard a lot about Fortune cookies, but do you know about Fortune cakes, yes Chinese peoples have their own Fortune cake which is usually prepared during Chinese New year. This Cake is one of simplest cake i have prepared till now. With easy ingredients and simple steaming process, one can prepare this Fortune cake with less efforts. I have bookmarked this Fa Gao from Chinese Sichuan Food long back, almost a year back i think. Since i want to clear some recipes from my Bookmarks i didnt hesitate a second to prepare this Chinese steamed cake to share with my Chinese neighbour for their new year this year.

Chinese Fa Gao, Fortune Cake

No eggs or butter/oil is needed for making this Chinese Fortune cake, obviously you may tag these cakes as Vegan. With just 4 ingredients, you can steam cook these beauties. However this cake are seriously addictive while they were warm. But still they can be reheated. Fa means Earning lots of money and Gao means cake, hence this cake is baked during Chinese New year obviously these cakes are very popular. Am running this week's blogging marathon with Bookmarked recipes as theme, hence am posting this Spongy Chinese Fortune cake.

Chinese Fa Gao

1cup All-purpose flour
130ml hot water
1/2cup brown sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder

Add the brown sugar to the hot water and mix well until the sugar gets dissolves.

Combine flour with baking powder. Add the sugar water. Stir the batter in one direction nicely until the batter turns smooth.

Scoop the batter to greased small molds. i used the small tarts moulds lined with muffin liners, usually ceramic moulds are used for steaming this cake.

Add water in a pressure cooker or in a large wok, arrange the moulds on a plate (given while buying the pressure cooker). Dont forget to add enough water.

Chinese Fortune Cake, Fa Gao

If you are using wok, place a bamboo steamer and arrange the moulds in it to steam cook.

Cover the lid and continue steam for around 20 to 25 minutes. Dont open the lid while steaming this will spoil the cake blossoming.

Remove the cakes and enjoy warm.
