Shahi Tukda or Shahi Tukra is a super rich dessert and its truly tastes divine with exotic flavors. Shahi Tukda is literally means Royal Piece or Royal Morsel. Though this sweet is prepared with bread, its origin is from Mughlai Cuisine. This dish is quite similar to Hyderabadi's popular dessert 'Double Ka Meetha'. I have been looking for an opportunity to give a try to this ultimate dessert for a while and finally i got a chance to make this ultimate dessert at home for a special festival. Holi, this festival of colours is quite a famous festival among Indian especially for Hindus after the festival of lights 'Diwali'. Obviously any festival or special occasion would be incomplete without sweet dishes. Being super exotic this scrumptious dessert will definitely please anyone's sweettooth.
Holi, this festival of colours is around the corner, i want to share this incredible dessert if you want to make something special for this beautiful festival. Though i dont celebrate personally at home, i seriously want to celebrate this festival.Being a South Indian, i came to know about this festival only after watching Nayagan, a famous tamil movie where there is a popular holi song. But now, this festival is quite celebrated everywhere in India. The Holi festival traditionally celebrates the victory of good over evil. It is associated with many legends, including the story of Holika. Many people in India believe that this holiday shows that the devotion of Hindu people can augment the power of Lord Vishnu. This celebration also honors Lord Krishna, a reincarnation of Lord Vishnu. In addition to its religious aspects, Holi also celebrates the end of winter and the arrival of spring.
5 Bread slices
1/4cup Ghee (for shallow frying)
Sugar Syrup:
1/3cup Sugar
1/3cup Water
2 Cardamom (crushed)
Few Saffron Threads
For Rabri / Rabdi (Thick Milk Topping)
3cups Whole Milk
2tbsp Sugar
2nos Cardamom(crushed)
Chopped mixed nuts (almonds, pistachios and cashew for garnish)
Heat water and sugar in pan, add the saffron strands once the water starts boiling.Once the sugar syrup turns little thick. Put off the stove and keep aside.
In an another pan, boil the milk in medium flame until the milk is reduced to about 1/4th of its original quantity.
Dont forget to stir continuously, once the milk is reduced, add cardamom powder, sugar mix well. Continue to heat it while stirring continuously for 5 more minutes.
Remove from heat and set aside .
Now take the bread slices and cut them into sides and slice it as square.
Heat ghee in a pan and shallow fry the bread till they are crisp and golden brown on each side.
Once the bread slices are fried, soak each slice in the sugar syrup for about a minute.
Arrange it on the serving dish. Pour the rabri over the bread slices and garnish with the chopped nuts.
Serve warm or chilled though i like mine when served chilled.
This is one sweet that I would love eat. Many make this at home. But, I hardly see it on restaurant menus. The common ones are only Carrot Halwa and Jamun. Its rare to find even Basundi these days. Good one and well written dear.
