Flammekueche/Tarte Flambée ~~International Food Challenge #2

French foods are well known all around the world and i love french desserts very much. Today's dish is from Alsace region of France and this region is very close to my heart. Every year, during xmas season we usually make a trip to Strasbourg, a well known Alsacian city where we can visit xmas market loaded with local foods and products, obviously since we are foodies we dont care about making two and half hours travelling to enjoy their regional foods. Am an ardent fan of their Quiche Lorraine and i do make them often at home with variety of veggies or meats. For this month's International Food Challenge , a monthly event started by two wonderful food bloggers Sara and Shobana, Shobana challenged us with delicious and  beautiful French Alsacian dishes.

Tarte flambée or flammekueche is a savoury tart prepared with onions and mostly with lardons, a salted pork meat, but i prepared as a vegetarian version by using onions and potatoes. Shobana suggested also to make Quiche and  Savoury Kugelhopf which i have already prepared and went for the tarte flambée since am yet to post this famous savoury tart. With a salad, this savoury tart makes a super filling dinner or lunch. If you are meat lover just mix and match the topping as you like. A fabulous savoury tart which is also known as French pizza, coz this tart sounds almost like pizza with cheese and a meaty or vegetarian toppings.

For the crust:
1cup Whole wheat flour
1cup All purpose flour
2tbsp Olive oil
1tsp Salt
Chilled water for kneading

Take the flours in a bowl, add in the olive oil.

Mix the oil with the flour thoroughly with your fingers.

Now add the chilled water and knead slowly to form a stiff dough, grease it with oil and wrap it.

Keep in fridge for an hour.

For the sauce:
2nos Potatoes (sliced thinly)
2no Onions (big & sliced thinly)
1/3cup Boiled milk or heavy cream
1/3cup Sour cream (i omitted )
1/2cup Créme fraiche or cream cheese or ricotta cheese
Salt
Pepper powder
A pinch of nutmeg powder
Grated cheese as per need

Make the sauce by mixing the créme fraiche, heavy cream to form a thick white sauce, add in the heavy cream to make a saucy consistency.

Add the salt, pepper powder and nutmeg powder, keep aside.

Preheat the oven to 250F. Line a baking tray with a baking sheet.

Heat few drops of oil in a pan, add the sliced onions and cook for few minutes until they turns transparent.

In the same pan,add more oil, fry the sliced potatoes for few minutes until they get half cooked and put of the stove.

Roll the dough as a thin rectangle shaped disc, place it in a baking sheet and make a border by pinching the edges towards up.

Spoon the already prepared sauce, top it with already cooked onion slices and potato slices.

Add the grated cheese on the top and bake for 15 minutes until the crust turns golden brown.

Cut the tart into medium sized wedges.

Serve warm with salads.
