Meethay Ghoday - A Hyderabadi Special

If you get a chance to make a super old authentic aka traditional sweet from Hyderabadi cuisine, am sure you wont ever miss that opportunity to make them at home. When Srivalli announced this month's Indian Cooking Challenge, immediately i checked the link suggested by Mireille, i was shocked to see that this month's challenge was this Meethay Godhay from Zaiqa, a traditional sweet from Hyderbadi cuisine. When i checked through google to know more about this sweet, only Mona shares this sweet and its quite unique. Eventhough this sweets sounds unique, the method of making this sweet is super easy.

This sweet goes for a simple dough which is rolled as a thin disc, then cut it as squares and make those squares as flower shaped pieces. Once done with the dough, let them dry for more than 6 hours or overnite. Once they gets well dried, those flower shaped doughs are deep fried. Finally cook those deep fried flowers in milk and sugar, later they are served at room temperature. Trust me, if you make this sweet, am sure you wont stop yourself with one serving. Thanks Srivalli and Mireille for suggesting this incredible sweet and Mona for sharing this traditional sweet she learned from her Mil..

Recipe Source: Mona
1+1/2cups Maida
1/4tsp Salt
1tbsp Oil (for dough)
Oil for frying
1/2cup Water
2cups Milk
1cup Sugar
Sliced almonds (fried)

Take the flour, salt, oil in a bowl, add little water at a time to make a dough.

Cover with a damp towel and keep aside for half an hour.

Then knead again for few minutes until the dough turns smooth, firm and pliable.

Divide the dough into 3equal sized pieces, roll a piece as a ball between your palms.

Using a rolling pin, roll each ball into a disc.
Make the disc as thin as possible and use less flour to roll them thinly, cut the dough as small squares with a knife.

Shape each square into a flower as show in the picture and continue until the dough gets finished.

Leave the flower shaped dough on the tray for atleast 6hours or overnite, i left mine overnite.

Next day, heat oil for frying. Once the oil is hot, fry the dried flower shaped dough until they turns crispy.

In a heavy bottomed pan, take the milk, water and heat it, add the fried flowers and cook in simmer for 15minutes until they turns soft.

Finally add the sugar and mix, add more water if need to cook them more.

Once done, add the shallow fried sliced almonds.

Serve at room temperature.

This is so unique by design. There are versions like cooking fried puris in milk, called Api payasa in Karnataka. I am surely going to make this for a party. Thanks for sharing.
