1/2kg Elephantfoot yam
1/2cup Onion ( chopped)
1 cup Coconut (grated)
1tbsp Ginger (chopped)
1 tbsp Garlic (chopped)
4 nos Green chillies
1 tsp Mustard seeds
1 tsp Chana dal
1 tsp Blackgram dal
3 nos Red chillies
1 tsp Fennel seed powder/sombu powder
1 tsp Garam masala powder
2cups Roasted split chickpeas/pottukadalai
Salt
Oil for deepfrying
Cut the elephantfoot yam into small cube pieces and wash them in cold water...Heat 1 cup of water with turmeric powder and yam pieces..cook it for 5 minutes.
Keep a kadai in a stove...heat oil , add mustard, black gram dal, channa dal,red chillies and let them turn brown ..add chopped onion, saute until its turns transparent...now add chopped ginger pieces, garlic pieces and green chillies to the onion...saute them well for 5 minutes, finally add the cooked yam pieces...put the flame to simmer, add salt but never add water...stir it well n cook slowly in simmer flame...smash the yam pieces a little bit with a wooden spatule...add grated coconut to the slightly mashed yam pieces and put off the stove..let them get cool...
Meanwhile grind the roasted split chick peas to fine powder...sieve it and keep aside .Grind the already cooked yam pieces in a blender...shouldnt add even a single drop of water even it will be difficult to grind the yam pieces. Try to grind it nicely like vada batter and finally add garam masala and fennelseed powder, the chickpeas powder to the mix...while making balls, this mix shouldnt stick in ur palms or in ur fingers..if its sticky add more chick peas powder.
Fry as deep frying and serve with ketchup!!
